Highbury and Islington station was evacuated because of a fire alert.

Passengers were cleared from the platforms at around 7.45pm after alarms sounded inside the north London Tube station.

Firefighters were reportedly called to the station which was reopened soon after 8pm.

Pictures shared on social media show dozens of passengers stood outside the locked up entrance as some described “mayhem” as they were ordered to leave.

Frustrated travellers vented on social media after the alert caused disruption to their journeys.

Rochelle Smith tweeted: “So for the second time this week I've been kicked out of Highbury and Islington station! #Fuming #SortItOut”

Another man described scenes of “mayhem” as passengers ran towards the exits.

But Labour MP Mary Creagh, who appeared to be caught up in the evacuation, praised station staff for remaining calm throughout the incident.

She tweeted: “All credit to @TfL staff & who evacuated Highbury and Islington station quickly and calmly this evening. Hope incident resolved quickly.”

Trains briefly passed through the station but are now stopping.
