Guests forced to flee West End hotels after fire breaks out at upmarket cake shop

More than 60 guests at an exclusive West End hotels were last night forced to evacuate after a fire in an upmarket cake shop.

Guests at the Kensington Hotel, where suites cost up to £1,500 per night, were left out in the cold for up to an hour after a fire in the basement of nearby Aux Merveilleux in Old Brompton Road.

Four engines and more than 20 firefighters tackled the blaze in South Kensington – opposite auction house Christie’s – at about 6pm.

The cause of the basement fire is still under investigation.
