The girlfriend of a commando who died during the London Marathon today spoke of her devastation as funds raised in his memory reached more than £150,000.

Army captain David Seath, 31, an Afghanistan veteran, died after suffering a suspected cardiac arrest three miles short of the finish line on Sunday.

His girlfriend Gaby Schoenenberger 29, a fashion designer based in Edinburgh, said his death left a “devastatingly large hole” in their lives.

She wrote on Facebook: “I cannot begin to describe the pain that I, his family and friends are feeling right now. It doesn’t make sense, and a character like his being taken away so viciously leaves such a devastatingly large hole in our lives.

“I don’t know how we are going to fill that hole, get through it or even come to terms with it but your support is so appreciated and like a blanket for us during these dark times.”

She went on to thank friends for their kind messages and support during this “heart-breaking” time.

Mr Seath, a fire support team commander in 29 Commando Regiment Royal Artillery, collapsed on Upper Thames Street.

Paramedics rushed him to St Thomas’ Hospital, but he was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.

His friends are now planning to walk the final distance and complete his run in his honour, with his parents Libby and Pete, his brother Gary, and miss Schoenenberger among those who are expected to join.

Following his death, close friend, Captain James Walker-McClimens of the 7th Parachute Royal Horse Artillery, set up a fundraising page, which has raised more than £88,000.

Mr Walker-McClimens, 34, who toured Afghanistan with Mr Seath, said: “In the Army we don’t like unfinished business, it was something he wanted to do.

“He wanted to do the full marathon, so we are going to complete it for him.”
