A cyclist who was trying to ride to Heathrow using the hard shoulder of the M25 had to be escorted off the motorway by police.

The rider was handed an on-the-spot fine after being caught pedalling along the motorway this morning, officers said.

A picture emerged on Twitter of the cyclist, who appeared to be dressed in a white top and black trousers, riding along the busy stretch of motorway.

Surrey Police’s Road Policing Unit tweeted: “A cyclist has just received an on the spot fine after being caught cycling on the M25 trying to get to Heathrow.”

Scores of people reported seeing the cyclist using the hard shoulder in heavy morning traffic in the clockwise direction near junctions 12 and 13.

Last year, a Bulgarian cyclist was caught try to ride to London using the M1, after arriving on a flight to Luton Airport.
