A driver was lucky to escape without serious injury when their car smashed into the side of a shop in Piccadilly Circus in the early hours of this morning.

The red Nissan hit a wall just inches away from the main entrance to the Tesco Metro store in Regent Street.

Although the car was badly damaged, the driver escaped without being seriously hurt, police said.

There was also only minimal damage to the wall, and the supermarket was able to open as usual this morning.

A Tesco spokesman said: "At around 4am a car has ended up crashing beside our store, scraping a bit of the exterior.

"There was no real damage to the store, and the store opened as normal this morning."

A Met Police spokesman said police had been called to outside the Lower Regent Street store at 3.20 this morning.

He added that nobody had been seriously hurt in the smash, but one person had been taken to hospital with injuries that he described as "not life-changing or life-threatening."

The spokesman said it was not immediately clear whether any arrests had been made.
