Boy George’s appeal to build an extension to brighten up his Hampstead Heath mansion has been thrown out by planning officals

The Culture Club singer was hoping to increase natural light to the Grade-II listed property by building a glazed extension and chopping trees down in the garden.

Camden Council rejected the proposals last September, claiming the extension would be “detrimental” to the character and historic interests of the Victorian building.

The 53-year-old pop star, whose real name is George Alan O’Dowd, launched an appeal which was again quashed by a Whitehall planning inspector.

A planning document said the glazed link would “cause harm to the architectural significance” to the building and could damage the “historic fabric and architectural details”.

The original planning application submitted to Camden Council said: “The proposed extension has been designed to create living spaces with a greater sense of connection to the garden and better levels of natural light. These spaces will have a different atmosphere and character to the internal spaces in the existing house.”

A letter against the proposal was sent to the council from the Hampstead Conservation Area Advisory Committee.

They wrote: “We object to the extension and the hard landscaping because of the garden take-up and potential light pollution.”

Boy George has lived alone in the property for 30 years.
