Bob Crow: former union leader's funeral to be a 'strictly private affair'

Details of a "strictly private" funeral for former trade union boss Bob Crow have been released.

A service to commemorate the ex-Rail and Maritime Transport Workers union chief's life will be held on Monday (March 24) in London.

Though the funeral itself will be a "private affair", a public procession will start from Snakes Lane in Woodford at 12 noon and travel to the City of London Cemetery and Crematorium by 12.45pm, the union said.

A minute's silence to remember Mr Crow, who died last week aged 52 after a massive heart attack, will be observed by union members at 1.30pm.

Further tributes will be paid by his former colleagues at the London May Day rally.

Mick Cash, RMT senior assistant general secretary, said: "The thousands of messages of condolence from every part of the globe are a testament to the courage, leadership and strength that Bob shared with so many people.

"Whilst Bob Crow’s funeral itself will be a strictly private affair his friends and family recognise that many people will want to show their solidarity, respect and support both on the day itself and on May Day. These arrangements give everyone a chance to play their part."

A fund has been set up in Mr Crow's memory by his family, with all donations going to the British Heart Foundation.

In an online post they described him as "a soul mate, loving dad, amazing granddad, baby brother, uncle, friend and comrade. Always full of life, living every day to the fullest."
