The Shard opened to the public almost exactly three years ago to the day, promising spectacular views of the capital for the princely sum of £25.

Today it remains a popular spot for those in search of a truly compelling London view. But as these pictures show, many other locations around the capital give it a run for its money.

The imposing silhouette of Canary Wharf broods in front of an early morning glow of sunrise in one ominous shot.

In another, a meadow in Richmond Park foregrounds a hazy backdrop of the capital’s unmistakeable skyline.

But not only skyscrapers make the cut. A bucolic scene of the Thames pictured from the other side of London’s largest park, immortalised by countless works of fine art, also gets a mention.

For Anthony Robbins, from the Museum of London, a great London view is one that encapsulates the city’s pace of change and unlocks the mysteries of the every day.

“It’s about the quality of the light and about the surprise of seeing how much of London is green," he said.

“For me a good view is about the details and the stuff of people’s lives.

“It’s also about the changing cityscape of the metropolis. When I moved here 13 years ago there was one skyscraper I could see from my house. It was Canary Wharf itself.

“Now they seem to be springing up all over the place. The rate of change is incredible.”
