A disabled man was today fighting for life in hospital after being hit by a tipper truck in south west London.

The 67-year-old pensioner, who is wheelchair-bound, was knocked down by the HGV in Queenstown Road, Battersea, during the evening rush hour yesterday.

Paramedics from the London Ambulance Service were called to the scene and took him to hospital.

His condition was described by police on Saturday as "critical".

The lorry driver stopped at the scene just before 6pm and has not been arrested, a spokesman for Scotland Yard said.

The victim's next of kin have been informed about the crash, he added.

Detectives are appealing for witnesses to the accident, which caused major delayed in the roads around Battersea Park station, to speak to them.

Anyone with information can contact the Met's Serious Collision Investigation Unit based at Merton on 0208 543 5157 or the police non-emergency line on 101.
