Andy Murray: My win doesn't merit knighthood

David Cameron today fuelled speculation that Wimbledon champion Andy Murray would receive a knighthood.

The Prime Minister, who was among the spectators at Centre Court, said that honours were decided independently but “I can’t think of anyone who deserves one more”.

He said Murray’s victory, which saw him become the first Briton to win the men’s singles title for 77 years, “lifted the spirits of the whole country”.

However, when asked about the prospect of a knighthood, Murray said: “It is a nice thing to have or be offered, but I don’t know if it merits that.”
