Passengers on a bus may have witnessed the killing of a man who was beaten to death at a bus stop outside Waterloo station.

Detectives appealed to passengers on a route 139 bus that pulled up opposite the scene of the attack in the early hours of Saturday.

Greek national Menelaos Aligizakis, 43, suffered severe head injuries in the clash with a man at around 2.45am. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The two men were apparently not known to each other and police have been shocked at the severity of the assault.

Mr Aligizakis, who is from Athens, was with a woman friend waiting for a night bus just before 2.45am when the attack took place.

Emergency crews attended but he was pronounced dead from serious head injuries at the scene on Waterloo Road, near Britain’s busiest rail station.

Detective Chief Inspector Will Reynolds, who is leading the murder inquiry, said the route 139 bus pulled up on the opposite side of the road to where the attack took place at about 2.45am.

He said : “A number of passengers are known to have left the bus at this point. I am appealing to those passengers in particular to contact police.”

He added: “This is a very busy part of London frequented by both commuters and those on a night out. We are keen to hear from people who were in the area or passing by at the time of this incident who may have seen or heard something that could help our investigation.

“A number of witnesses have already come forward and we are grateful to them for doing so.”

Police say it is not clear if the victim had been visiting or weorking in London.

Mr Aligizakis’s family has been told of his death and are travelling to London from Greece.

Mark Patten, 30, from Thornton Heath, south London, was due to appear at Camberwell Magistrates’ Court today charged with murder.
