A 16-year-old boy has died after he was shot in east London during a "shocking" night of violence in the capital.

The teenager died in hospital at 5.45pm on Tuesday, Scotland Yard said.

He was found suffering from gunshot wounds in Walthamstow on Monday night, with another boy, 15, who had been stabbed.

A 17-year-old girl was killed in a suspected drive-by shooting in Tottenham shortly after 9.30pm last night.

Police were called to reports of shots fired Markhouse Road at around 10pm last night, a spokesman for the Met said.

Officers and London Ambulance Service attended and the two boys were rushed to an east London hospital.

It was thought the 15-year-old had suffered life-changing injuries.

Walthamstow MP Stella Creasy declared the incident a "horrific and distressing attack" in a Facebook post on Tuesday.

The 16-year-old died of his injuries in hospital surrounded by his family, the Met said in a statement.

The 15-year-old was treated for stab injuries, which are no longer life-changing, it added.

A murder probe has been launched led by the Homicide and Major Crime Command alongside the Trident and Area Crime Command.

No arrests have been made following the attack.

The incidents come amid concerns over rising violent crime in the capital.

On Sunday a 20-year-old man became the 31st victim of knife crime in London so far this year. He was fatally stabbed moments after leaving a bar in Wandsworth and died in the street.

And nearly 50 people have been murdered in the capital so far this year.

According to Met Police figures, 47 murder inquiries have been launched since the beginning of 2018.

DCI Glenn Butler from the Trident and Area Crime Command said: "I fully appreciate the alarm, shock and revulsion caused by this murder and other fatal shootings we have seen across London over the last few months.

"We are doing everything we can to identify the culprits and bring them to justice. We can't do this alone. We need those within the community who have information about those involved to search their own conscience and call us with information.

"Detail forensic testing including ballistic analysis and the recovery of local CCTV footage is in hand and my officers will be knocking on doors."

Chief Superintendent Tania Coulson from Waltham Forest, said: "My thoughts are with both families and loved ones at this devastating time for them following a fatal shooting and stabbing in our borough.

"Yesterday was a shocking night for all of us in Waltham Forest which left two young men suffering terrible injuries; one of whom has now died.

"We are doing all we can to address community concerns. Over the past 24 hours we have had extra officers patrolling the streets, additional police cars on the road and specialist officers from our 'Operation Sceptre' unit carrying out a range of intelligence led operations and patrols.

"I would like to reassure members of this community that this strong police presence will continue."

Anyone with information concerning this incident is requested to call police on 101 quoting CAD 6727/02 April or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. You can also tweet information to @MetCC.
