Two men have been jailed for running a cannabis factory in an abandoned nightclub opposite a police station.

Elidon Leka, 26, and Blerim Daci, 28, had around 60 cannabis plants growing inside the derelict Alley Cats and Basement nightclub in Carshalton Road, Sutton.

Police found the haul – with a street value of around £170,000 - hanging from the ceiling above the old dance floor ready to be harvested after smashing through a barricaded door.

Officers also discovered that the pair had also been sleeping rough at the nightclub, which closed around two years ago.

Leka was jailed for 20 months, while Daci was handed a 24-month jail sentence at Croydon Crown Court on March 29.

Both pleaded guilty to being concerned in the production of the Class B drug at earlier hearings.

PC Paul Arnold, who led the investigation, said: “Officers worked well to gather the evidence from a building where the inside had been ripped out and left in a hazardous condition.

“Our operation kept a huge quantity of drugs - worth around £170,000 - from reaching local streets.”
