Three people have been arrested in connection with a hit-and-run collision that left a cyclist dead.

The 27-year-old woman died at the scene of the incident near Pulborough, West Sussex, last night, police said.

A silver Citroen Xsara was travelling on the A29 at Codmore Hill when it overtook another car and crossed a double white line onto the opposite carriageway. It then collided with the cyclist, from Kingsfold, lost control and crashed. The driver then fled.

Two people were arrested at the scene, a 22-year-old woman from Crawley and a 17-year-old boy from Horsham, on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, drink driving and theft of a vehicle.

A 26-year-old man from Billingshurst, West Sussex - believed to be the driver - was arrested later on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, drink driving and driving while disqualified.

All three remain in custody.

Sergeant Stewart Goodwin said: "We are appealing for anyone who saw a silver car travelling in the Stane Street area around 8pm. We need to speak to any witnesses who saw what happened or saw the car prior to the collision."
