A chart-topping singer is too afraid to open her own door after her music producer husband punched and threatened her, a court heard.
Charlotte Kelly, 41, said she has been left “paranoid and jumpy” after Benjamin Bennett, 47, turned up at her home begging to be let in.
When she refused, Bennett deluged her with text messages and then threatened: “I’m coming for you.”
Bennett, who has a previous conviction for assault after cracking two of Miss Kelly’s teeth, was yesterday given a 12-month community order after being found guilty by Hammersmith magistrates of harassment without violence.
In a victim impact statement, Miss Kelly, who is blind, said: “I have been paranoid and jumpy every time the doorbell rings. I didn’t even open the door to the postman the other day because I couldn’t see his ID badge.”
She is a one-time member of Soul II Soul who wrote lyrics for the 2010 Roll Deep hit Good Times and topped the US Billboard dance chart with her single Skin in 1999.
She married Bennett in 2013 but the marriage had broken down by November last year when he turned up at her Hammersmith home.
Miss Kelly refused to give evidence against Bennett, from Pulborough, West Sussex, and asked the court not to impose a restraining order.
