A moped rider has died after a crash with a stationary lorry in north London this lunchtime.

The man, who police said was aged in his 30s, was killed after hitting the vehicle in Seven Sisters Road, Tottenham just after 2pm today.

Paramedics rushed to the scene but the victim was pronounced dead minutes later, the London Ambulance Service said.

Police closed the road next to the junction with Culvert Road while officers investigated.

A witness, who asked not to be named, said the moped rider had hit the front of the lorry in slippery conditions.

He said: "I arrived when the ambulance was here. It is very slippery - he went under the lorry. It was very sad. An hour ago he was just a normal guy riding along.

"All the neighbours and the workers at the car wash next door were standing outside watching. Someone tried to take his helmet off to help him but then the ambulance arrived."

A spokesman for Scotland Yard said the lorry driver had not been arrested following the incident.

In a statement, he said: "Officers are in the process of notifying his next of kin. A post-mortem examination will take place in due course.

"There have been no arrests. Road closures are in place."

A spokeswoman for the London Ambulance Service said: "We were 2.01pm to the junction of Seven Sisters Road and St Ann's Road to reports of a road traffic collision.

"We sent a number of resources to the scene including an ambulance crew and single responder in a car.

"Sadly, a patient died at the scene."
