Rene Richardson, 24, collapsed and died at the scene of the attack in Plumstead on Monday afternoon.

He was approached by two men in Grassdene Road before he was stabbed repeatedly, Scotland Yard said.

Mr Richardson, who was from the area, then staggered to nearby Bournewood Road where he was pronounced dead by medics who had battled to save his life.

His next-of-kin have been informed and formal identification was due to take place. A post-mortem examination into the cause of his death was being carried out on Wednesday.

A 23-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder, in Bognor Regis, Sussex, on Tuesday afternoon.

They were also trying to trace a suspect, described as a black man wearing a white t-shirt, who was seen leaving the scene of the stabbing in a BMW sports car.

Mr Richardson was the first of three young men to be stabbed to death on the capital’s streets in the space of just 24 hours.

Witnesses said Mr Tarabi was chased through an estate and cried for help before his brother tried dragging him to the safety of a nearby house in Newnham Close. He was pronounced dead just after 5.30pm.

He was rushed to hospital by paramedics but died about an hour later from his injuries.
