A police officer was injured during "chaos" as a mass brawl broke out in south-west London.

Officers were called to reports of a fight involving up to 15 people in Kingston in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Three people were arrested following the large-scale disturbance in Clarence Street which is believed to have involved two groups.

PC Paul Foley was sent as back-up and ended up having his hand broken when an arrested man kicked out at him after he was taken to Kingston Hospital for treatment before being booked into custody.

The officer used his hands to protect his face but suffered broken bones and torn ligaments when he was struck with a kick.

Kingston Police said the officer now faces weeks in a cast as he recovers after he was called to help deal with the "chaos".

Acting Superintendent Gary Taylor said: “When I found out about his injury I quickly challenged him to a left handed press up competition but sadly he declined.

“However, on a serious note I would like to commend his bravery and commitment in keeping Kingston and his colleagues safe. We all wish him a speedy recovery."
