Footage has emerged of the moment a thug apparently attacks a cyclist after refusing to move from his path.

The shocking video shows an argument break out when a youth appears to block the path of the Boris Bike rider on a 'cycle superhighway' in east London.

As the cyclist tries to make the youth move, the video seems to show him being punched several times.

The rider is then apparently shoved to the ground in front of shocked bystanders near Shadwell.

When the victim gets up, a youth appears to aim another blow at his head as members of the public move to intervene.

A video of the incident then shows the victim trying to stem the flow of blood from his nose at the junction of Cable Street and Cannon Street Road.

A cyclist called Raphael, who did not want to give his surname, filmed the incident on a bike-mounted camera and uploaded the footage to his YouTube channel.

He told the Standard: "I arrived at the scene, and saw one guy holding the front wheel of the bike saying 'this is my bike'.

"The guy explained that it's a hire bike, and then it starts - that's literally it."

The 32-year-old, of Canary Wharf, added that "everybody that was around" then tried to help the victim after the incident.

He said that the victim, named only as John, contacted police and added that the video clip has been passed to detectives.

A spokeswoman for the Met could not immediately provide further details.
