A young man was stabbed in the chest and beaten with a glass tube after stepping in to break up a fight, police said.

Attackers left the 23-year-old peacemaker with a lacerated lung and broken rib as they set on him inside a newsagent in central London.

He had intervened after spotting his attackers arguing in the street with another group of people, the Metropolitan Police said.

Detective Constable Joe Marston, of the Met’s Central North CID, said: “The victim sustained serious injuries in what was a needless and incredibly violent attack.”

The assault happened on Saturday September 23 at about 5.30am on Grays Inn Road. CCTV captured the incident after the victim was chased into a shop fitted with security cameras.

On Monday, detectives released the pictures and footage of the altercation in an effort to trace two men linked to the attack.

Det Con Marston added: “We would urge anyone who recognises these men to contact police as soon as possible.”

The victim was treated in hospital for his injuries and has since been discharged as he recovers.
