A man is due to appear at court accused of seriously injuring a police officer after he allegedly ran him down with a stolen car.

Luke Haywood, 28, from Whitley, is alleged to have hit PC Gareth Browning, 33, in a black Mazda on Saturday afternoon, as the officer tried to block the car.

The injured officer is currently in a critical but stable condition. Another colleague was unharmed in the incident on Lower Early Way West in Reading.

Haywood, of Chagford Road, faces charges of causing grievous bodily harm with intent to evade arrest, dangerous driving and aggravated vehicle taking.

He will appear at Reading Magistrates' Court today.

A 31-year-old woman arrested in connection with the incident has been bailed until January 16, while a 34-year-old woman has been released without charge.

Assistant Chief Constable of Thames Valley, John Campbell, said the thoughts of his force were with the injured officer and his family.
