The Muslim Council of Britain has condemned the terror attack which struck the heart of London.

Religious leaders said it was too early to speculate on the attackers' motives but offered "thoughts and prayers" to the victims.

A police officer and a knife-wielding terrorist were among four people killed in the attack on Wednesday.

A man was shot outside the Houses of Parliament after a car mowed down pedestrians on Westminster Bridge.

Scotland Yard's most senior counter-terror officer said up to 20 people were injured and a serving police officer was killed in the attack.

Many public figures, including Mayor of London Sadiq Khan, have praised the “tremendous bravery” of the emergency services during the incident.

Among them was the MCB, which in statement said: “We are shocked and saddened by the incident at Westminster.

“We condemn this attack and while it is still too early to speculate on the motives, our thoughts and prayers are for the victims and those affected.

“We pay tribute too to the police and emergency services who handled this with bravery.

“The Palace of Westminster is the centre of our democracy and we must all ensure that it continues to serve our country and its people with safety and security.”

Scotland Yard confirmed the incident is being treated as a terror attack and London Ambulance Service said it has treated at least 10 patients.

Issuing a statement shortly before 4.30pm, the Mr Khan said: “My thoughts are with those affected and their families.

"I would like to express my thanks to the police and emergency services who work so hard to keep us safe and show tremendous bravery in exceptionally difficult circumstances.”

He urged Londoners to visit the Met Police website for further information.

Prime Minister Theresa May was set to chair a meeting of the Government's emergency Cobra committee to discuss the immediate response to the attack.
