Residents have spoken of their shock after a young man was gunned down outside a café in a north London high street.

The man, believed to be in his early 20s, was shot in Kilburn High Road at around 5.20pm on Thursday.

Photos showed paramedics battling to save the man's life as he lay wounded on the pavement.

He was pronounced dead at the scene shortly afterwards.

Women from a local mosque ran screaming into the street, concerned they knew the victim, witnesses claimed.

Scores of police cars then appeared and the road was cordoned off.

Shocked resident Holly Patrick told the Standard: "I have heard violent stories about previous shootings, stabbings and murders but I mostly feel safe in the area.

"There is a good sense of community.

"But I will now be cautious about going down the high road."

Another resident complained the area was becoming like "the wild west".

Labour MP for Hampstead and Kilburn Tulip Siddiq tweeted: "So shocking. My thoughts are with victim and his family.

"I'll be supporting them as much as possible."

One resident told the Standard: "I didn't see it happen, but everyone sure heard the bang.

"It sounded like some shop sign or a sheet of metal falling."

The manager of minicab firm Swift Cars said he saw a person lying on the pavement being given CPR.

He said: "People were shocked and confused. I've been told the first person attempting to help the victim was an Asian-looking woman, who jumped out of her car."

"An elderly lady asked me what happened," he said. "I replied a person was shot.

"She said, 'oh my god, why is it happening again and again here in Kilburn?"

The road was cordoned off as police descended on the area.

There have been no arrests so far.
