Police have carried out a controlled explosion on a suspicious vehicle near the Israeli Embassy in Kensington.

Witnesses reported hearing a blast after Metropolitan Police officers cordoned off the road in High Street Kensington.

The Israeli Embassy is on the adjacent Palace Green, less than 100 metres from Kensington Palace.

A Met spokesman confirmed they had been called to a "suspicious vehicle" before undertaking a controlled explosion.

Officers set up a police line and directed members of the public away from the scene while it was on-going.

T.S. Ó Ceallaigh ‏wrote on Twitter: "Looks like something serious is happening in #Kensington. Lots of police officers clearing area near High Street Ken."

Another user, Judy Johnson, wrote: "High Street Kensington evacuated by police (street not tube) - what's going on?"

And Freddy Clode said: "Just in High St Kensington, big explosion, then immediate police everywhere closing off road, stuck in the repercussive traffic - hope it's ok"

The area was reopened shortly after 6.30pm.
