A motorist who mowed down and killed a pedestrian while having an epileptic fit has been jailed.

Stuart Lusher, 56, defied doctors' warnings that he was not fit to drive before fatally hitting Phil Westnott with his car in Merton, Kingston Crown Court heard.

Lusher, from Sutton, suffered an epileptic fit at the wheel of his Mazda SUV when he stopped at a red light in Merantun Way on June 27 last year.

The seizure caused him to drive onto the pavement and hit 48-year-old Mr Westnott from behind, leaving him with a catastrophic head injury.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Lusher, who has a history of epilepsy and chronic sleep apnoea, was driving to visit his gravely ill wife in hospital at the time of the crash, police investigations revealed.

He was jailed for three-and-a-half years yesterday after admitting causing death by dangerous driving.

Lusher has also been banned from driving for life.

Detective Sergeant Jeff Edwards said: "I must firstly pay tribute to family of Mr Westnott for their dignity and courage during this difficult investigation.

“Mr Lusher's decision to drive, despite warnings from medical staff, resulted in a terrible collision that cost an innocent man his life.

"The consequences of that day have resulted in an innocent man losing a life and now Mr Lusher losing his liberty."
