A 15-year-old has been jailed for stabbing another teenager in a “savage and unprovoked” attack in front of horrified shoppers in north-east London.

The victim, also 15, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was rushed to hospital with life threatening injuries after he was stabbed five times outside JD Sports in Hackney on Boxing Day last year.

He had been walking with a friend in Mare Street when two boys approached him and started a fight.

His attacker stabbed him repeatedly stabbed after his victim got him in a headlock, police said.

The 15-year-old boy has been left scarred for life by the attack, having been stabbed in his cheek, his abdomen and in the back - a wound which narrowly missed his spine.

The attacker, who also cannot be named, was jailed for six years having pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm with intent and being in possession of an offensive weapon in April.

He was sentenced at the Old Bailey on Monday.

The second defendant was sentenced earlier this year at Stratford Youth Court after pleading guilty to affray and actual bodily harm. He was given an 18-month detention order.

A Met Police spokesman called the attack “savage and unprovoked”, with the boy having left his home with the “sole purpose” of stabbing somebody.

Detective Inspector Paul Ridley, from the violent crime unit in Hackney CID, said: "This was a particularly horrific knife attack which took place in broad daylight on a busy street during the Christmas period.

“There were many families and children present who witnessed the attack and the aftermath.

"The victim has made a good physical recovery but I hope that today's result will bring a degree of closure to him and his family.”
