A "Dad's Army" of men accused of carrying out the multi-million-pound Hatton Garden gems heist were today denied bail as a tenth man was arrested in connection with the raid.

It is alleged that the men plotted together to enter Hatton Garden Safety Deposit as trespassers, with intent to steal therein.

At Westminster Magistrates' Court today, the group appeared only to confirm personal details before being remanded in custody.

They had arrived at the court in a convoy of police vans escorted by armed officers with a police helicopter overhead.

Prosecutor Edmund Hall said that while the total value of the goods stolen was not yet known, it ran "in excess of £10 million" and 73 safety deposit boxes had been looted.

It came as Metropolitan Police Flying Squad officers seized a man aged 42 at an address in Essex. Described by Scotland Yard as white British, he is the 10th man to be arrested.

Thieves broke into the vault of Hatton Garden Safe Deposit Company in London’s jewellery quarter after climbing down a lift shaft to the basement.

They used an industrial drill to bore a hole 20in deep, 10in high and 18in wide through the vault wall. Once inside, they ransacked 72 safety deposit boxes, taking millions of pounds of goods.

The men in court, who are all charged with conspiracy to burgle, were Terry Perkins, 67, Daniel Jones, 58, and Hugh Doyle, 48, of Enfield; Brian Reader, 76, and Paul Reader, 50, of Dartford; William Lincoln, 59, of Bethnal Green; John Collins, 74, of Islington; and Carl Wood, 58, of Cheshunt. A ninth man has been bailed pending further inquiries.
