This is the first picture of a “beautiful” young woman who plunged to her death from the balcony of her flat.

Friends have paid tribute to 22-year-old Jourdain John-Baptiste who was found by a neighbour at the bottom of a 10-storey block in Enfield, north London.

She was heard screaming by horrified neighbours moments before she fell four floors.

Police, who arrested a man at the scene on suspicion of GBH are treating her death as “unexplained”.

A friend who attended Salisbury School in Enfield with Miss John-Baptiste told the Standard: “She was my classmate in secondary school, we’d always make her sing for us in class. Her voice was beautiful. It’s such a tragic loss.”

Maria Lee, 46, lives in the same block and said: “It’s such a shame. I used to say hello to her in the lift and I used to see her out and about. She was very quiet and polite. She would ask how my day had been.

“It’s just tragic. She came across as such a nice girl. She was so young. She was such a lovely pretty girl. She had a lot to live for. She had a nice little car and she had a good job at the gas company. Everybody is devastated."

Another friend said on Twitter: “I’ve just got tears rolling down my face. I can’t believe she’s dead. I’ve known her since we were 11. We’re 22 now. I can’t believe this.”

Murder detectives are investigating the “unexplained” death of Miss John-Baptiste, who worked as a senior administrator for heating company Liberty Gas.

Police were called to Gainsborough House, a 10 storey housing block at 1.42am on Friday. She was found on grass outside the block where dozens of flowers have now been placed.

Paramedics treated her at the scene and she was taken to an east London hospital where she died later that day.

A 24-year-old man, who was believed to be known to the woman, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm before being released on police bail.

Detective Chief Inspector Neale Baldock of the HMCC said: “This is a sad case whereby a young woman’s life has been tragically cut short. We are appealing for witnesses or anyone with any information to come forward as soon as possible. We are especially keen to hear from anyone who may have witnessed what occurred on the victim’s balcony prior to her fall to help us with our investigation.”

Anyone with information should call police on 020 8721 4868, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
