The police officer who was injured during the attack in Glasgow is now in a stable condition.

Constable David Whyte, 42, was one of six people injured during the incident at the Park Inn Hotel in West George Street on Friday.

Three asylum seekers staying at the hotel and two members of staff were also injured.

The force said one was in a critical but stable condition, while the others were stable.

First Minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon tweeted: “My thoughts today remain with Constable Whyte – whose bravery we are all deeply grateful for – and the other people who sustained injuries in yesterday’s terrible incident. I wish them all a full and speedy recovery.”

The knife attack took place on Friday afternoon. The male suspect shot dead by police. Ms Sturgeon said the stabbings was not being treated as a "terrorist incident".

The Park Inn hotel is currently being used to house asylum seekers during the coronavirus outbreak, the BBC reported.

Police Scotland chief constable Iain Livingstone paid tribute to the officer, stating: “My thoughts and very best wishes are with those who have been injured and their families, including our colleague Constable David Whyte who was seriously injured in the course of doing his duty. I offer my personal support to all those affected.

“Officers have once again run into danger to protect their fellow citizens. Their professionalism as police officers was outstanding.

“I pay tribute to their bravery, selflessness and commitment to protecting the public.

“I briefed the First Minister and the Prime Minister earlier today on the circumstances and advised them both that we are not treating the attack as a terrorist incident.

“It is essential enquiries are now carried out to establish the full circumstances and all speculation must be avoided.”

Aside from Mr Whyte, aged 42, the other victims were men aged 17, 18, 20, 38 and 53.

Ms Sturgeon said the incident remained under investigation, and praised the police response which “undoubtedly ensured that a very, very serious incident didn’t become much worse”.

She added: “I would urge everyone to avoid such speculation, to not share potentially harmful or upsetting material on social media and to follow police advice while investigations are under way.”
