Tributes have been paid to a much “loved” father-of-five who was found strangled to death in his own flat in east London.

Darren Ammon, 47, was discovered after a neighbour became concerned about his wellbeing alerted police at 12.18am on Wednesday.

Officers burst into the flat that Mr Ammon had just moved into in Kirton Gardens, Bethnal Green to find him dead.

A post-mortem examination held on Friday gave a cause of death as compression to the neck.

His children issued a statement to the Standard: “We will remember our Dad for his cheeky sense of humour and undeniable loyalty to his family.

“We as a family are still coming to terms with Darren’s death. We will continue to remember all of the good memories we have with him.”

Mr Ammon’s death came as two young men were shot dead and a third left fighting for life following a street gunfight in east London early on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, a manhunt continues for a suspect who stabbed one woman to death and wounded another in Stratford.

Mr Ammon’s family thanked the police for supporting them, adding: “Especially during the last week where there have been such violent deaths and crimes carried out in east London. Other families are having to suffer the same painful loss of loved ones we are. This can’t go on any longer.

“Darren had been trying very hard to make changes to his life, he spent most of his adult life on and off the streets and was doing well after securing a new home and new start.

“His children are devastated and were looking forward to a future with their dad, now this will never happen, it’s so sad.”

His family are raising £3,000 for the funeral of the man who they said would open up his home to anyone “with nowhere else to go”.

His niece Sade Ammon said: “Darren was well loved by his family and the people he grew up with.

“He was on-off homeless for a number of years but had finally been placed in a home, he was happy and optimistic about this.

“Darren would often welcome people to stay with him if they had nowhere else to go, unfortunately his generosity may have cost him his life.”

On Saturday, Salieu Seray-Wurie, 25, was arrested. He will appear at Stratford Magistrates’ Court on Monday charged with murder.

DCI Neil John, who is leading the investigation, said: “My thoughts remain with Darren’s family as they come to terms with this terrible loss. We will continue to provide them with every support.

“The arrest of a suspect at an early stage of our investigation is a positive development and is thanks to the determined work of the detectives involved.

“We are still keen to build up a more detailed picture of Darren’s life, his friends and acquaintances and in particular, his movements in the days leading up to the discovery of his body on October 19.

“I would appeal to anyone with information – no matter how insignificant they think it may be – to come forward.”

Anyone with information can call police via 101, quoting reference 145/19OCT, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
