Detectives were today continuing to question a former colleague of missing chef Claudia Lawrence after arresting him on suspicion of murdering her.

Bachelor Michael Snelling, 59, was arrested yesterday at his home in the Heworth area of York, less than half a mile from where Miss Lawrence lived.

He was employed as a lab technician in the department of biology at York University — where Miss Lawrence, 35, also worked — until being made redundant last year.

He is now a project co-ordinator for the mental health charity Mind.

Forensic officers were today continuing to search his house and an area behind a garage. Officers say they have been following new leads using police techniques not available in 2009.

Yesterday they removed his blue Ford Focus car for examination.

Police are also still searching a second property, in North Shields, which is believed to belong to his 84-year-old mother Dorothy.
