A commuter was shot in the leg on his way to work at a suburban railway station early today.

Robin Clark, a 44-year-old City trader, was with a colleague and had just arrived at Shenfield railway station in Essex when he was attacked.

Mr Clark had driven to the station with his friend and had just got out of the car in the station car park when he was shot once in the leg.

He collapsed in agony on the ground while his colleague called police. He told officers he saw a man in a balaclava run to another car near-by and drive away.

The victim was rushed to hospital with a gunshot wound but his condition is not thought to be life threatening.

Detectives today appealed for witnesses to the attack just before 6am to come forward.

Police said the victim has no obvious links to crime or gangs and they was no clear motive for the incident.

Officers were due to interview the victim at the hospital later today.

The station was closed before rush hour while British Transport Police examined the scene, but later reopened.

The victim was taken to Basildon General Hospital to be treated for his “serious” wounds.

No arrests have been made.

Anyone with information is asked to call British Transport Police on 0800 40 50 40 quoting reference 48 on 24/1.
