Police arrested 55 people after a gang stormed a Sikh temple.

Armed police rushed to the Gurdwara in Leamington Spa after reports of between 20 and 30 men “trespassing” shortly before 7am this morning.

Officers believed some of the men were armed with “bladed items”.

Religious leaders were also reported to be inside the temple negotiating with the men.

Warwickshire police confirmed that they are not treating the incident as an act of terrorism, saying the incident was as a result of a local row.

Superintendent David Gardner said: "We would like to reassure people that this was a contained incident that we believe was an escalation of a local dispute.

"A significant number of bladed weapons were seized from the scene. As a result of reports that the men were in possession of these weapons we deployed armed officers as a precaution. Nobody was injured in the incident.

"Over the coming days we will be working with local the Sikh community to address some of the ongoing issues that have culminated in today's events.

"We would like to thank local people for their patience while we dealt with this incident."

A former treasurer at the temple told the BBC that a marriage between a Sikh and non-Sikh was due to take place.

Jatinder Singh Birdi: "There have been tensions that have been going on for a couple of years with some people objecting to mixed marriages in taking place in the gurdwara.

"The general consensus is people are respectful of mixed marriages if the traditions are respected.

"Nothing has happened on this level before.

Eyewitness Perry Phillips posted pictures of police stationed outside the building and said: "Protests today at Leamington Spa Gurdwara Sikh Temple, armed police turn up, alleged protesters with swords."

He later tweeted: "Our Sacred Gurdwara Sikh Temple Leamington Spa stormed by protesters against marriage ceremony - armed police stand by."
