There was no sign of any hard feelings last night between Simon Cowell and his unauthorised biographer Tom Bower who reveals in his new book, Sweet Revenge: The Intimate Life of Simon Cowell, that the X Factor supremo favours “black loo paper” in his London and LA homes and once had a secret affair with Dannii Minogue.

Cowell surprised guests by turning up to the book launch at the Serpentine Gallery in Kensington Gardens. Bower said he had written books “on 20 victims” and Cowell was the first to turn up to one of his book launches.

“Being invited here was rather like a cat inviting a mouse to a dinner party,” Cowell joked. He added he had spent the past week “hiding under a pillow ... I knew it was bad because friends were sending sweet messages asking ‘are you okay?’ I wish to publicly apologise to anyone I embarrassed. I do have to apologise to members of my family. ”

Guests included Bernie Ecclestone and girlfriend Fabiana Flosi, Sir Philip Green with daughter Chloe, and Cowell’s friends Lauren Silverman and executive producer Kelly Bergantz. Cowell told them: “Ten years ago, if I had read someone would be writing a book about me, saying I’d made loads of money, shagging loads of girls, I would have said, ‘Great’.

“I have got to like Tom. It’s like Stockholm syndrome. You’re kidnapped and you start to like him.”

Cowell also joked that he would be writing a book about the sordid sex life of Bower. The pair then went to dinner at the Arts Club
