Smooth sailing: the Mondrian London arrives on the Southbank

The Mondrian London at Sea Containers House opens on the South Bank on September 30
Class apart: the Mondrian London hotel and spa is minimalist yet extravagant

The capital’s luxury hotel scene saw major openings from Ham Yard and the Shangri-La at the Shard so far — and the Beaumont to come.

Morgan’s Hotel Group joins them with the opening of the Mondrian London at Sea Containers House on the South Bank on September 30.

Design Research Studio under the creative direction of Tom Dixon has fused elements of the glamour of transatlantic travel with industrial — ocean-liner cabins influence the style of the 359 rooms and a mammoth curved copper hull sits in the lobby.

It’s all sleekly minimal — you won’t find cheesy cruise-motifs here, rather slender hand rails in the Dandelyan cocktail bar and in the 56-seat screening room.

But the real showstopper is the AGUA Bathhouse & Spa, possibly London’s most glamorous and extensive hotel spa yet with a floor-to-ceiling copper teardrop installation and brands such as Soveral, Dr. Jackson’s Natural Product, Estelle & Thild, Natura Bisse and CIATE (and no, I haven’t heard of all of them either). Ship ahoy.

Doubles from £165 room only, introductory rate until September 30, then £195, mondrianlondon.com
