While commuters and snow shovelers lamented, skiers and schoolchildren in Reykjavík were elated at the weekend, as record-breaking snow covered Iceland's capital in the thickest blanket of white the city has seen since 1937. Icelandic photographer Gunnar Freyr Gunnarsson captured the snow-covered city in all its white, fluffy glory.

Cars seemed to disappear under the 51 cm of snow, and bus service was stalled until late afternoon while streets and sidewalks were cleared.

Icelanders waded through thigh-deep snow, and pedestrians were forced to walk in the streets.

There were reports of rescue works assisting drivers and even trips to the emergency room for those who overexerted themselves trying to shovel the giant snow piles.

The previous record for February snowfall was 48 cm, which was recorded in 1952, the Icelandic government wrote in a Facebook post. The greatest snow depth ever recorded in the capital was in January of 1937, when Reykjavík saw a massive 55 cm snowfall.

Although schools, churchesand most businesses were closed for the day, photographers were hard at work capturing fairytale-like images of icy streets, snow-topped cars and even the brave Reykjavíkians who ventured into the storm for a bit of playful fun.
