Going for gold in Puerto Rico

P61 Puerto Rico
12 November 2012

At the beginning of this century, Laurance Rockefeller, of the filthy rich North American Rockefeller family, built the Dorado Beach estate and resort on the east coast of Puerto Rico.

During its Fifties glamorous heyday it became a favourite of Ava Gardner, the Kennedys and Joan Crawford.

On December 12, Ritz-Carlton will re-launch the original resort with the opening of 114 rooms and residences, set on the beach of the 50-acre Reserve — a new brand aiming to fuse elements of local culture and history.

Built on a coconut and grapefruit plantation, the Reserve will retain the natural aspect, with an open plan lobby and low-density buildings built on the footprint of the original hotel. The 1920s Su Casa five-bedroom hacienda has also been restored.

The Dorado Beach Resort will include Spa Botanico, with its tree-house style treatment platforms and glass-walled pavilions, and is the only golf venue in the Caribbean offering 72 holes.

If you like it that much, beachfront residences will be available to buy for a cool $2.5 million.
