For a last minute break in a cosy central London base, look no further than Durrants...

Where is it? In Marylebone, surrounded by fashionable boutiques and lovely cafes. Oxford Street, Bond Street and Selfridges are a five minute stroll away but you benefit from a quiet, village feel here.

The Wallace Collection, conveniently just across the road, is a must visit for French 18th-century painting, furniture and porcelain as well as magnificent Old Master painting.

The light-filled courtyard restaurant, pictured below, is one of London’s hidden gems. Celebrity haunt Chiltern Firehouse is around the corner and it is certainly worth popping in for a drink and some star spotting.

What’s the story? This cosy establishment has been owned and managed by the Miller family for nearly 100 years. It is refreshing for such a centrally located hotel to reflect the independently run ethos. Staff are attentive, rooms are well looked after and there is a homely atmosphere.

Design details: Individually decorated suites and rooms pay homage to the original Georgian architecture. There is almost a traditional English private members’ club style with sumptuous fabrics, classic furniture and antiques. Hand-made Savoir beds add to the comfort.

Which room? Options range from a single to a suite with a separate sitting area. The classic double rooms are a good size for a weekend stay. The Spy Room and Wallace Room on the ground floor are also ideal communal spaces for meeting guests.

On the menu: Breakfast is served in the restaurant until 11.30am. Room service is also available. There is a full ‘a la carte’ menu for lunch and dinner, as well as a set menu which changes daily. We would recommend popping into The George Bar before or after dinner for a relaxing drink in dramatic surroundings.

Best for: A long weekend in the heart of London. This is the ideal base to explore all the capital has to offer.

When to go: this would make for a great Autumn or Winter break destination. We can imagine curling up in The George Bar after a day of shopping, seeing the sights or making the most of the capital’s culinary delights before retiring to the guest room.
