Cool place of the week: The Felin Fach Griffin in Powys, Wales

It’s the time of year to get cosy, with winter walks and roaring fires, and we reckon there’s no better place to celebrate the fact that the nights are drawing in than the Felin Fach Griffin in Powys – a rather special gastropub with rooms on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park that does some great Dinner, Bed & Breakfast deals once the clocks have gone back.

The Griffin has seven very comfortable rooms above a restaurant that is one of the best in the region.

But it's also a proper pub, serving well-priced, well-kept local ales, with comfy seats for local drinkers and a roaring fire in winter.

Oh, and dogs incidentally are welcome (along with children) in the rooms upstairs. These are all different in size and style, but they all have big comfortable beds, digital radios, homemade biscuits and fresh flowers, posh toiletries – and plenty of reading matter for when all you want to do is slob about.

The breakfasts are sumptuous and delicious, and a good indicator of the quality of the dinner you'll enjoy once you're back from a hard day's walking or book-browsing in Hay – or just poking about the small local Boho towns of Brecon, Abergavenny or Crickhowell.

Indeed there's so much to do in the area, but also so many reasons to stay put at the hotel, that we reckon there is perhaps no better place for a cosy weekend away this autumn.
