Stunning shortlisted photos revealed for 2018 UK picture editor awards

From a sweet snap of Prince Charles holding his grandson Prince Louis to synchronised swimmers at the European Championships, here is some of the shortlisted talent for the prestigious awards

A shortlist has been announced for the prestigious 2018 UK Picture Editors' Guild Awards.

Photographers in the news, sport, business, fashion and entertainment industries, as well as those who take photos of the royal family, were invited to submit entries for the competition in November 2018, and winners will be announced on March 25, 2019.

Submissions are being judged by picture editors who work on national, regional and international publications, as well as photo agencies.

The image above, captured by Ian MacNicol, in which the Spanish synchronised swimming team compete at the European Championships in Glasgow, has been shortlisted for the Sports Photographer of the Year category.

Meanwhile the photo below, taken by Luke Ross Cameron, is a finalist for Student Photographer of the Year. It depicts an MoD fireman running away from the mock aeroplane fire he ignited for a routine practice at Predannack Airfield.

  • Canon Sports Photographer of the Year
  • Videojournalist of the Year
  • Fixation News Photographer of the Year
  • Photo Essay of the Year
  • Fleet Street's Finest National Newspaper Photographer of the Year
  • Fujifilm Student Photographer of the Year

From these winners, the Shutterstock Press Photographer of the Year will also be selected
