Tart London: how to make super healthy spring smoothies

Jemima Jones and Lucy Carr-Ellison whizz up delicious, health-boosting spring smoothies

Spring signifies life, love and hope, youth and growth.

This week we have come up with some wholesome drinks to reflect the fresh, healthy new season.

We asked our great friends Chloé Cunningham and Ali Falgate from wellbeing consultancy Health is Wealth how we can use natural herbs and nutrients to put a proverbial spring in our step. The unusual ingredients might make these recipes appear a little challenging, but they are inexpensive and easy to find in health stores or online.

First up, a shot of sexuality. This ruby concoction is built on a base of sensual, zinc-rich fruit: strawberry, pomegranate and red grape. Zinc is essential for sex drive and endurance, while pine pollen has potent libido-enhancing properties. Pine pollen is also anti-ageing as it supports production of collagen and elastin. We have added avena sativa (oats) tincture to promote vitality and support the nervous system.

Second, a heart-opening elixir. Constant stress in our busy lives leads many to adrenal fatigue and burnout. This is often further stressed by coffee. As such we have come up with a delicious, restorative alternative that has a little caffeine but is also nourishing. Cacao has powerful mood enhancing properties and has traditionally been consumed in ceremonies to inspire creativity, chillies have long been considered an aphrodisiac and rose has that lovely romantic smell.

Lastly, our fruity smoothie, which contains more zinc, this time for its anti-ageing properties. The amino acid arginine is thought to aid reproductive health, while the green veg contains lots of folic acid. The good fats help maximise blood flow, vitamin C is a great antioxidant and wild oats nourish and strengthen the body.
