Driven: New Audi RS3 Sportback

Faster than ever with even better handling; that’s what the facelifted Audi RS3 promises. Can it deliver?

The Audi RS3 and Mercedes A45 AMG have traditionally battled for hot hatch horsepower supremacy, boasting monumental straight-line performance. Both models are now approaching 400bhp, yet neither has so far quite touched the kind of playful, grin-enducing drive we’ve come to expect of the very best contenders in the sector, such as the cheaper BMW M140i and Ford Focus RS. All that could change, though, with the arrival of the facelifted Audi RS3 Sportback.

The 2017 RS3 hatch boasts 33bhp more horsepower than its predecessor, at 394bhp, as well as a wider stance, a lighter, TT RS-sourced five-cylinder motor and fettled four-wheel drive. Together, the enhancements promise to boost drive enjoyment to previously unexplored levels – for Audi, at least.

NOT FOR RE-USE

Off-the-line pace is seriously impressive, thanks to a huge 354lb ft of torque from a mere 1700rpm, while a slick-shifting auto box helps dispatch 0-62mph in an effortless 4.1 seconds. There isn’t the same high-rev rush as the M140i or Honda Civic Type R deliver, though, and a hard press of the throttle can cause the transmission to dither.

The powerplant’s weight-loss programme benefits the dynamics, however. The lighter front end means the RS3’s turn-in to fast corners is more sprightly and accurate than before, and the optional adaptive dampers fitted give superb body control and lean resistance.

From the cabin, road, wind and exhaust noise are subdued, and even the optional and great-sounding sports exhaust isn’t too intrusive. The minimalist interior features plenty of soft plastics, well-damped switches and attractive chrome styling cues, and beats the BMW for quality – even if our grey-trimmed test car felt a tad restrained. Classy RS touches include embossed RS logos, a flat-bottomed wheel and cross-stitched leather seats, while Audi’s Virtual Cockpit digital display can also be specced. The front passengers get plenty of space and comfortable yet supportive standard-fit heated electric sports seats with adjustable lumbar support.

Superb all-weather performance, daily-drive comfort and practicality, a sector-topping interior plus excellent infotainment make the new Audi RS3 Sportback a genuinely talented motor. Does that justify its near-£45,000 anticipated price, though – which is a substantial increase over the outgoing model’s sub-£40k?

Maybe, maybe not, but we’d go for the cheaper-to-run, equally practical and ultimately more involving BMW M140i – and save near-on £13k.
