The old problem of knowing which neighbours to call at on Halloween could be solved by an app allowing users to sign up for trick-or-treating duties next week.

Nextdoor, a social network for neighbourhoods, allows households that are game for Halloween to pin their home on a map for trick-or-treaters to see.

Homes offering treats show up as a wrapped sweet while “haunted houses” hosting parties appear as purple icons.

The firm said the Halloween function allows parents and children to plan the best route through their neighbourhood while avoiding those who do not want to be disturbed.

Mother-of-two Georgie Shield, 42, from Merton, said the map will take the hassle out of organising a fun, and safe Halloween for her sons Hugo, eight, and Elliot, six, as they try to scare the neighbours dressed as werewolves.
