In a bid to keep pace with modern audiences, Lego has announced that it will soon be selling a set of female Nasa pioneers.

The Danish toy company will release a set of five female scientists, engineers and astronauts based on real women who have worked for the space agency.

The design was picked by the company as part of its Lego Ideas competition, after receiving 10,000 public votes.

Maia Weinstock, an American science writer who created the figurines, tweeted the exciting news today.

The news that it had won was a “dream come true” she said.

Weinstock wrote in her initial proposal the toy maker that the set would allow both kids and adult fans to learn about STEM pioneers who've previously gone unrecognized.

Her design trumped several other prospective new designs, including plans for a Large Hadron Collider made out of Lego.

The news comes after the Oscar-nominated film Hidden Figures shined a spotlight on mathematician Katherine Johnson d other female scientists who helped NASA reach the moon in the 1960s.

Nasa’s Hubble account tweeted that the Women in Nasa set would be available to buy by late 2017 or early 2018.
