Take a glimpse into their £13 billion property portfolio

The Queen has a seriously enviable property portfolio.

Not only does she call Buckingham Palace her official London residence, she also has a number of other castles to call home across the UK along with other sprawling private estates.

The British Royal Family have two types of property: those owned by the Crown Estate and those that they privately own.

The Crown Estate belongs to the reigning British monarch throughout the duration of their reign and this Estate looks after an exhausting amount of properties. However, just because it belongs to the monarch does not mean the Queen has any rights when it comes to selling the properties and taking revenue. However, she does receive 25 per cent of their revenue to help fund her official work and the upkeep of her residences. Many royals live in Crown Estate homes but they lease these off the Crown.

The Queen also has a private property portfolio, the Duchy of Lancaster. This was established for the reigning monarch in 1399 as a way to provide independent income to the Sovereign. This is one of two royal duchies, the other is the Duchy of Cornwall which provides the Prince of Wales with independent income.

The British Royal Family also have a number of private properties to their name so it's no wonder their extensive property portfolio is now worth an estimated £13billion. Yep, it sure does pay to be a royal.

Below are the houses that the royals own and use as private residences.
