Apex: Peloton's shiny new (and cheaper) competitor

Get back in the saddle — go for a spin in your living room

We may be able to return to a treadmill at Barry’s in a couple of weeks, but it could be a little longer before we’re back in the saddle — Core Collective worries it won’t be able to open its spin studios until guidelines are cut from two metres to one and Boom Cycle doesn’t expect to open until August.

Mercifully, you don’t have to fork out for Peloton’s £2,000 bike and £39-a-month subscription to get that indoor cycling experience while you wait.

The brand has hinted that a cheaper version might be on its way, but British designers have been hard at work to bring the capital a more affordable solution in the meantime: a shiny new spin-bike brand called Apex that lets you stream endorphin-inducing workouts created by Boom Cycle from home at 60 per cent of Peloton’s cost.

The sleek, Bluetooth-connected spin bike comes in four colours — black, navy, white and nude — with weights built into the back of the saddle for those customary arm exercises.

Unlike Peloton, there’s no built-in monitor — the interface is via your own iPad or iPhone (or you can cast it to your TV screen), but the real magic lies in Apex’s partnership with Boom Cycle.

For £30 a month you can dial into live and 24/7 on-demand classes from the studio’s instructors and just like in class, you can ride alongside your mates: the app features real-time metrics, interactive leaderboards, fun challenges and reward schemes to push you harder at home. The bike itself costs £1,200 (with £120 deposit upfront). Deliveries are booking up fast: hundreds were reserved within minutes of Boom Cycle’s announcement in April.

Early-bird offers have all sold out but for the next nine days you can grab yourself another deal: Apex’s late-bird package includes a two-month free subscription worth £60 plus a £100 home workout bundle while your bike is on its way.
