If you're looking to sculpt and tone your body in time for summer, then it seems throwing a few punches is the way to go - Victoria's Secret Angel Adriana Lima certainly seems to think so. The top model has boxed for more than 10 years and combines it with skipping.

Here, Pierre Pozzuto, head trainer and boutique gym 1Rebel, gives us seven reasons why boxing is a great way to get in shape, and stay in shape.

It strengthens your core

Boxing is an amazing sport for strengthening your core muscles as it uses a lot of power from your hips and waist. The stabilising you have to master in order to keep your balance really works your core muscles, helping you to tone and strengthen up. Your muscles are always working and your body is tight, in anticipation of being hit!

It improves your balance

Boxing is great for improving both your mobility and stability as it requires you to move quickly and fluidly, and think fast with excellent hand-eye coordination in order to keep sharp and on your toes.

It's a cardio work-out

Boxing fitness is high intensive interval training (HIIT) that really utilises your upper body, combining a number of different inter linked disciplines and movements. Due to this it is incredibly tiring but totally worth it as unlike some sports it conditions the whole body whilst teaching you fun techniques.

It's a low cost sport

All you need is a pair of gloves and a skipping rope and you are set to go, which makes the sport low cost.

It's good for your mental health

Aside from the physical benefits, boxing has been acknowledged to be great for your mental health as it can help reduce stress by physically relieving your body of any built up tension, releasing positive endorphins and the same time. It’s a great opportunity to blow off steam and punch a bag for 45 minutes!

It's about body composition not weightloss

As boxing is a full body workout, you'll see an improvement in your body composition. It’s not about weightloss - results should be driven by a lower body fat percentage, tighter body, and better definition.

Quick results

Due to the combination of exercises when boxing, you should expect to see results quickly.
