Riccardo Tisci, 41

The Italian designer has held the top job at Givenchy since 2005 and designs 10 collections a year for the French house. Tisci’s sensual and subversive collections have resulted in soaring profits and a fiercely loyal celebrity clientele, which includes Kanye West and Kim Kardashian.

Phoebe Philo, 42

The Central St Martins-trained north Londoner and former right-hand woman to Stella McCartney manned the helm at Chloé for five years before moving to Céline in 2008. Philo is often credited with redefining how women everywhere aspire to dress. She commutes to Paris from London, where she lives with her three children.

Jonathan Anderson, 31

Anderson’s reputation as one of the industry’s most fêted young designers was cemented by his 2013 appointment as creative director of LVMH-owned Spanish luxury house Loewe. The Northern Irish talent works two days a week in Paris and designs his eponymous label in his Dalston studio.

Karl Lagerfeld, 82

A man who needs no introduction, the veteran designer is the driving force behind Chanel — a title he has held for more than 30 years. He has also been in charge of Italian label Fendi for more than half a century alongside designing for his eponymous label.

Hedi Slimane, 47

Since taking up the mantle from Stefano Pilati as creative director at Yves Saint Laurent in 2012, Slimane has won fans and enemies for his determination to update the house’s legacy with his adored rock ’n’ roll aesthetic. The French designer honed his signature rake-thin silhouette while designing menswear for Yves Saint Laurent and later Dior Homme.

Marc Jacobs, 52

Jacobs’s 16-year legacy at Louis Vuitton spans the label’s first ready-to-wear collection to his all-black swansong show in 2013. The New Yorker, who is currently focused on his own label, was tipped to succeed Galliano at Dior but declined the role on the advice of his psychiatrist.

Demna Gvasalia, 34

Revered for breathing new life into Paris Fashion Week, Gvasalia heads up the collective of designers behind of-the-moment label Vetements. The Georgian wünderkind was a surprise replacement for Alexander Wang for the top job at Balenciaga. Gvasalia, who has previously led design teams at Maison Martin Margiela and Louis Vuitton, will stage his first show for the brand in March.

Nicolas Ghesquière, 44

The former Balenciaga designer is revered for his masterful approach to a contrasting silhouette, which resulted in much critical acclaim for the French fashion house. Now at Louis Vuitton, Ghesquière is proving a canny successor to Marc Jacobs with the ability to carve out an intellectual new direction for the brand.

John Galliano, 54

Following his spectacular fall from grace and the Dior top job in 2011, Galliano’s reputation and career are experiencing a gradual recovery thanks to a deliberately low-profile at Maison Margiela. Stepping out of the limelight has allowed the British designer’s creations to shine once again.
