Fashion designer Jonathan Saunders embarked on a new chapter at London Fashion Week last night as he unveiled his first collection since securing financial investment for the brand he launched in 2003.

At the close of the third day of the capital's fashion showcase Scottish-born Saunders, who announced last month that his eponymous label had received backing from businesswoman Eiesha Bharti Pasricha, made his first bid to become an international luxury brand with a highly wearable collection which demonstrated his acute understanding of what his growing customer base wants.

The result was an offering rich in key pieces destined to become must-have items when they reach stores.

Dresses featured in abundance, from sharp A-line shifts to minimalist pinafores and scoop neck sheath dresses. Sash neck-tie silk blouses, knee-length pencil skirts and intarsia knit sweaters were also designed with the wardrobes of working women in mind.

A series of flared trousers with accordion pleat inserts were a highlight, along with a raglan-sleeve collarless coat which appeared in contrasting shades of white and spearmint.

Saunders long-standing affinity with print and colour was also used to great effect, with bold stripes of gradient hues and graphic Sixties patterns.

Pasricha, 31, who is married to Hoxton hotel founder Sharan Pasricha, has a keen interest in supporting creative London designers who have the potential to launch brands with global commercial appeal.

Last year she became a minority stakeholder in the Roksanda brand by Serbian designer Roksanda Ilincic which enabled the label to open its first standalone store on London's Mount Street and gain a new CEO in former Aspinal and Burberry executive Carmela Acampora.

Only time will tell if similar developments are on the horizon for Jonathan Saunders's label. Though judging by this latest offering, he's already moving in the right direction.
