Dior has released a documentary offering a look at the behind-the-scenes action from the closed-door catwalk it hosted for the Cruise 2021 collection.

The film 30-minute film, Dior in Puglia, captures the colours, characters and soul of the region which was the backdrop and inspiration for Maria Grazia Chiuri’s SS21 collection.

It features conversations with locals, many of whom attended the event in Lecce over the summer, and the work of local artisans who assisted in the run-up to the magical show. Chiuri got her inspiration from the native artisan techniques for which the area is renown - including rare tombolo embroidery and ancestral weaving - and the region’s mystical connections and notorious magic rituals such as tarot reading.

Puglia is close to Chiuri’s heart - her father was born there and it’s where she spent many a summer as a child. “It’s very important to me to emphasise how much craftsmanship there is in Puglia and reinvest in it. So many people depend on our work,” she said in a press conference at the time. “I found a great sense of sisterhood and brotherhood among these people.”

The brand’s largely digital Cruise 2021 show, which had no fashion press, influencers, or celebrities present, marked the first time the French fashion house had shown a collection in Italy

The show took place in Lecce’s Piazza del Duomo which was lit up by coloured bulbs created by artist Marinella Senatore. A local orchestra played a score by composer Paolo Buonvino while models weaved in between traditional folk dancers.

As for the collection, flowing maxi dresses were crafted in long and light cotton, poplin kerchiefs were tied in the models’ hair and Italian wheat was transported in Dior’s signature tote bags, a signal to the collection’s nostalgic bohemian DNA. “I have never worked so hard or for so long on a collection,” said Chiuri.
